The sale systems are slow and the software used for annual passes is confusing and clunky. Employees are not provided radios at locations that need frequent communication. During opening day and the following busy weeks, employees were not given microphones and expected to yell over background music and hundreds of other people. If I had to describe it in a nutshell, there are load-bearing columns directly in the middle of the entrance AND exit. Theres just vague murals that dont point to any real conservation organization. An employee had to throw a fit just to be allowed to pass out sustainable seafood cards inside the aquarium. It's also sponsored by Coca-Cola, one of the largest producers of plastic pollution. There is little to no conservation funding provided by the aquarium. To be clear, the animal care staff do everything within their power, but when the CEO of the company says "every guest should be able to feed the turtles and stingrays", they're forced to overfeed the animals. Most things were sacrificed for the sake of guest experience, like animal welfare and employee safety. The aquarium was really hyped up but smaller than you'd expect, and we knew it was sinking but kept on playing as things divulged into chaos.įirst and foremost, the aquarium is an attraction, not an educational center. Working at the aquarium made me feel like the orchestra on the Titanic. Overall if you're looking for easy Volunteer time, or just a job that's different from the norm, they're good people.
But not fulfilling if you plan to do more with your career. Entry level jobs would have you working the different exhibits and directing guests which are easy. It is also very competitive for positions from what I've heard. I do know that if you plan to work with animals you will need a degree in marine biology to even consider a job as an entertainer/trainer/diver. I personally won't be working there since I have other plans. I felt connected and involved even in a small way. They made me feel welcomed and I made many friends fast. They accommodated my busy schedule even when I had last minute changes. But they care about the Volunteer experience and communication with supervisors was always good. I am not an employee, so i cannot speak for the company itself. It's such a fun experience watching them get excited to do something they may not get to otherwise.

We also get to assist with feeding stingrays and showing guests how to do it. Volunteers do not have to do as much as employees, but we get to interact with guests and provide them facts and information about animals.
Anyone and everyone can go and have a great time. Older reviews do not reflect the current environment and they've made great strides in accommodating people with special needs or disabilities. The aquarium has been such a great experience and I totally recommend it. Despite the few negative reviews, I was looking for a place to do volunteer work for a class and took the plunge anyways.
